How do you measure manufacturer claims of airflow delivery?
You may hear a lot about airflow rates on various pieces of equipment. While some manufacturers produce their own in-house ratings, others choose independent firms. The issue with self-rating is that there is no common reference point.
Take a simple standard like a ruler or yardstick. What would the world be like if everyone made their own “ruler”? You’d get a lot of variation, wouldn’t you? You really need a common reference point provided by an independent, unbiased organization to get a benchmark for a measurement. In the United States, the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) is one such group. In Europe, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is another.
The Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) provides the benchmark for the ventilation industry. AMCA is a non-profit international association of manufacturers that develops standards and measures equipment airflow delivery rates on an independent and non-biased bASIs. They have testing facilities in both North
America and Europe.
The AMCA 240 test procedure for positive pressure ventilators uses a standard 36“ x 72” door opening. Because larger diameter fans are constricted by the standard door opening, the AMCA test procedure can accurately measure airflow for fans up to 21” in diameter. Currently no standardized test procedure exists for larger fans.
Fans larger than 21” require a greater structure opening than a standard single doors due to the wide cone of air.
The lesson here is that smart buyers ask for AMCA Certified Ratings. They don’t rely on manufacturer claims, which are difficult if not impossible to verify. If the fan company cannot provide an AMCA rating on their PPV equipment, you may find that their airflow is not what it’s claimed to be.
